In a surprise move by Russia’s Vladimir Putin launched a military operation in Ukraine. With explosions heard across the country, the foreign minister of Ukraine warned about the invasion as well.
“I have made the decision of military operation”, Putin said.
After weeks of diplomacy and imposition of Western sanctions on Russia, Putin started the operation. He massed 150,000 to 200,000 troops along the borders of Ukraine. It was reported that heavy artillery fire happened which seemed to be missile strikes actually.
The soldiers at Ukraine’s borders revealed that Russian forces entered the country from several directions. Russian tanks and other such heavy equipment crossed the frontier into the northern regions and the Kremlin.
Putin warned other countries that any interference would lead to severe consequences for them as well. Soon after he spoke, explosions were heard from Kyiv, Kharkiv, and other areas of Ukraine. A Kyiv-based journalist told that the blasts were around 5 am.
After hours of attacks, the Russian defense minister claimed that Ukrainian military airbases and defense systems had been neutralized.
A Ukrainian Minister said that “hundreds” of casualties happened. The number of casualties was not confirmed. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister tweeted, “Peaceful Ukrainian cities are under strikes. This is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and will win. The world can and must stop Putin. The time to act is now.” He also advised the Ukrainians in Russia to leave immediately.
US, Europe, NATO, and United Nations left Ukraine high and dry during the attacks. The prime minister of Ukraine officially requested PM Modi to talk to Vladimir Putin over the war quoting it as “Mahabharata”.
